What is an Invitation Letter for US Visa?
An invitation letter for US visa, is a letter or document written by a legal resident of USA to request the presence ( or visit ) of a non-US resident to the United States. Writing an invitation letter for US visa can be quite challenging when you have no idea about what is expected. My goal in this article is to show you how to write the letter and also present so samples for inspiration.
If you would like to know how a proper invitation letter for US visa should be written, you have found the right article. In writing an Invitation Letter for US visa (Tourist visa) what is most important is to ensure that all the required information is in the letter.
In 2016 alone (according to CNN) the USA issued over 10 million non-immigrant visas to visitors all over the world. And in 2018 over 9 million non-immigrant visas were issued. Most of these visas were issued based on the belief that these visitors would leave the United States of America at the end of their visit. Although you would not see an invitation letter among the list of documents required for the issuance of a B2 Visa, it is highly suggested that you have one with you when attending a visa interview.
There is no specific method or style for writing an invitation letter. However, you must ensure that all the required information is visible in the letter. Please note that the consulate does not require an invitation letter for the issuance of a B-2 Visa. An invitation letter is a good document to have because it gives more details about the reason for your intended visit to the USA.
In summary, the following should be in the letter of invitation.
Your letter should include the following information about the person being invited:
- Complete name.
- Date of birth.
- The person’s address and telephone number.
- Your relationship to the person being invited.
- The purpose of the trip.
- How long the person you are inviting intends to stay in the United States of America.
- Details on accommodation and living expenses.
- The date the person you are inviting intends to leave the USA.
Your letter should also include the following information about the person writing the letter:
- Complete name.
- Date of birth.
- Address and telephone number in the United States.
- Occupation.
- Your status in the United States
- A photocopy of a document proving your status in the United States.
How does the visa officer evaluate an invitation letter?
The Chief of the Non-Immigrant Visa Unit at the U.S. Consulate in Casablanca, Morocco, Ms. Nahal Kazemi, participated in a Town Hall meeting with Moroccan Americans, in Washington, where she spoke about various aspects of immigration policies affecting the Moroccan and Moroccan-American community. In this clip, she talks about the invitation letter for US visa.

There are two ways to address an invitation letter for US Visa. You could either address it to the visa officer or you could address it to the person you want to invite. Please find below a sample invitation letter addressed to the US consulate! The names on it are fictitious but this format has been used and visas have been issued using this format. There are other formats that can be used. The most important thing is for the information required to be on it.
Remember that this is just a sample and we are not in any way connected to the US immigration.

How should the Invitation letter for Visa be delivered?
I suggest you write the invitation letter on a computer, get it printed and signed. You can then scan the signed letter and send it to your guest(s). You can attach scanned copies of your immigration documents and send them via email as well.
What Next After the Invitation Letter is Written?
Once you have written an invitation letter, you send it with copies of your documents as listed above to your guest. Your guest will them obtain and fill out an application for visa form. The procedure for obtaining and filling out these forms as well as cost varies from country to country. It is the responsibility of your guest to contact the embassy or consulate of the country they want to visit to find out the procedure. Most embassies have these procedures listed on their websites. You can find links to some of these websites on the right-hand side of this page.
In many cases, your guest would need to schedule an appointment for a visa interview online. In some countries, the visa office will contact your guest to give him or her a date for a visa interview. During this interview, several questions will be asked to determine their eligibility for a visitor visa and to confirm that what they wrote in their application is true.
If the visa officer is satisfied with the answers they provide to her questions, they will be issued a visa. The visa office will then instruct them on when to come back for their international passport with the visa already placed in it.
Is an Invitation Letter for Visa really necessary?
Many countries required an invitation letter for the issuance of a visitor visa in the past. These days however, some countries have stated that an invitation letter for visa application is not required.
Nevertheless, they require proof of the purpose of your visit and an invitation letter in many cases is the only proof you have that you want to go and visit your cousin or girlfriend for a few weeks.
If however you want to visit the USA for example and you have no friend there, you do not need to look for an invitation letter from a stranger. Find ways of showing that you are visiting the country as a tourist and that would satisfy the requirement to show proof of the purpose of your visit. Read what the US visa office has to say on this issue
Greetings and good day!
I wanted to know if Group Application is still available today when applying for a Visa
Thanks
Hi Veronica,
Yes Group Application is still available in some countries. It is no longer available in some. Where are you?
I’m from the Philippines
Group Appointment is Available in the Philipines
Will that mean that it is okay that a representative from the group will vouch for the rest in the interview at the embassy?
Yes. Here is more info about Group Interview

Hi , I m a USA Green card holder, I like to invite my mom to visit to USA for 2 months, she doesn’t know English, So I need to send invitation letter in her language?
Hi Parmjeet,
The Letter should be in English. It should be readable by the US consular. You may have a translation of it on another document.
Hi, I was planning to invite my sons to come and vist me here in the US. They are from Philippines. What should i Do?
Hi Brigette,
You can simply invite them. If they are adults and they can show that they will return to the Philippines after the visit, they may get the visa. It is usually quite difficult to prove that a young man will return to a developing country..
HI Admin, my friend want me come to visit him as we be friends long time. do i need him send me a letter or can he send me an email for an invitation?
Me need help
A letter is better! He can print the letter, sign it, scan it and send it to you via email.
Hello,
I have noticed that in all invitations, it is stated that the inviting party will cover the costs. Is this better? I will cover my costs, I make good money and I am going to stay at my friend’s home, but he is not paying for my plane tkts for example.
Also, is it better to say friend or boyfriend?
And finally, should we include that he is coming back to Europe in autumn, so that it is obvious that I have no intention staying in the US more than declared?
Thank you!
Hi
It may be better to say friend. However what really matters is that you show your ties to your home country. Use documents to show that you have t return to you good job, you properties and connections in your home country.
I don’t have any body in US to send me invitation letter but i need help if u can render
hello,
am applying for a US visa through my friend, i used his details as my contacts, also my cousin is getting married, and she will also send details, can i present both my friend’s letter of invite and the wedding invite? what do you suggest.
Hi Temi,
It is wise to use just one letter. Your chances are greatly improved by your ability to show that you will come return to your country. The invitation letter is just a very little part of the puzzle.
Hello, I am a permanent resident, and I want to write a letter for my mom, girlfriend or brother,
I am 19. I came 2 years ago.
Hi Javier,
You are qualified to invite them. However, because they are family it becomes a bit harder for them to show that they will return to their country after the visit. This does not mean that it is impossible. They just have to get more documents.
Hello Sir,
My American cousin together with her boyfriend will like her Nigerian mother to visit for summer. They live together and will sponsor the trip of her mother in Nigeria. What are the steps and what documents do they need to submit for her to come? my aunt is 59 years old.
Hi Nikky,
Apart from a letter of invitation and scanned copies of your cousin’s passport there is no other document that is needed from your cousin. Your Aunt on the other hand needs to provide as many documents as she can lay hands on to show that she will return to Nigeria after the visit. Your cousin and her boyfriend may choose to show that they can financially afford to support her by sending some pay stubs or bank statements. This is not really necessary though.
Pls I just want to know if there need for tourist invitation letter if
I am visiting as a tourist.
Hi Lijofi,
If you don’t have an invitation, you can still apply for a B2 Visa – take a look at my post on the home page of this site. The last paragraph of the page. https://www.sampleinvitationletter.info/
here is what the US embassy has to say – http://tirana.usembassy.gov/invitation_affidavit.html
Hello, ok so i send a letter for my friend and how she start the process? She has to go trough the tourist visa process and at the interview she presents the letter? or with the letter is another process??
Thanks
Hello Admin i have someone in USA who wants to send me an invitation and she will be the one to sponsor the trip
What will be needed of me to do
Hi Banky,
You need to work very hard on getting documents to show that you will return to your home country. When you do not have a good job that make it possible for you to afford to travel to the USA, it becomes a lot harder to show that you plan on returning to your home country.
Hi Admin
My name is Yaa Yaa my boyfriend who’s a from USA Atlanta Georgia wants me to visit him soon I’ve read all the above information and I know I need to get an invitation letter first which my boyfriend is preparing for me
The question is I’m from Ghana I have a job and we met on a dating site and have not met before but we talk everyday and call each other also my boyfriend is sponsoring the whole thing what necessary documents should be provided to make it a reality and is the probability that I will be given since we met online
Or can he state it as a friend instead of a boyfriend? And should we go for the b2 visa or fiance visa?
Please help me out
Hi Yaa Yaa,
The fiance visa is better if you plan on getting married within a short time of getting to the USA. In any case it is very difficult to prove your case if you have never met each other. If your boyfriend has the means, he should visit you first in Ghana and then it would be easier to get you to visit him in USA.
If you apply for the B2 visa, you still need to show that you plan on returning to Ghana. If your boyfriend is footing all the bills, it makes it hard for the visa officer to believe you plan on returning to Ghana.
Hi Admin,
Thank you for enlightening many of us on what to expect and recommendation on how to pursue US VISAs. I’d like to follow up on Anima’s last post and your response – March 2nd 2017 post. I have a girlfriend from Philippines that have met online. I would like to sponsor her to visit me for couple weeks/months.
I will be sponsoring and “footing all the bills” for her visit. You’d mentioned that this may be difficult for my girlfriend to get a VISA even though I’m sponsoring her due to fact visa officer’s concern of her intent of return.
My girlfriend isn’t employed and lives with family members – parents and her kids. I hope not all is lost in trying to get her visitation VISA. Please advise if this is remotely possible.
Thanks and eager to hear back
Hi Robert,
There is only a very remote chance. Things have become more difficult over the years because many people over the years have received visas and have refused to return to their home countries. You may increase her chances by visiting her. My suggestion though is that you still make the effort and if she doesn’t get the visa, you can then think of other options. I hope this helps.
Hello,my name is Chinedu, my girl friend wants to send me an invitation to visit her in USA but she don’t know how to go about it and she don’t have a passport, more especially she want us to get married immediately I come over there, but she’s saying she want me to start a life with her there after our marriage, but all I have seen is the invitation letter is only for a month, how will she go about it
Hi Chinedu,
Your girlfriend can apply for a Fiance visa for you. You can see more info here!

Hello, my name is Ezekiel Kuteh from Sierra Leone. I came to the US during the Ebola in 2014. I am married with 3 children and they are all back home in Sierra Leone with my wife. I am benefitting on the TPS for people from ebola countries. My wife’s best friend wants to send her an invitation to come and attend her graduation in the US. Will my being in the US affect her process since I have not gone back to Sierra Leone yet? Please help me out, its urgent.
Hi Ezekiel,
If you are legally in the USA, then it should not affect her. However, be aware that she would be asked several questions about her family during the visa interview. I am not in the position to tell you what the visa officer will decide to do. All I can say is that, your being in the USA makes it harder to show that she will return to Sierra Leone.
My boyfriend is inviting me to visit him for six months. He has stayed with me in Malaysia on and off for more than a year. Does he need to state in the letter that he wants me to come stay there for six months? And is it possible for him to make the visa payment at the embassy in USA for me?
Ho Dalena,
Your boyfriend needs to state exactly how long you plan on staying in the USA. 6 months however is quite long if you are employed at a job. If you are not employed then it becomes a little harder to show that you would return to Malaysia.
Your boyfriend cannot pay for your visa application.
Thank you for your reply. I am employed but my contract will end soon and will resume next year. I can produce an employment letter from my employer. If that’s the case, does he still need to mention six months? We are hoping to get six months per entry.
I think technically you can stay up to six months. I have seen people get 2 years multiple entry visas on their first attempt to visit USA. On such visas you can stay up to six months each time. Most of the people I have worked with have asked for less than 6 months and all of them have received visas for more than 6 months.
So maybe you can state 6 months in your letter. But be prepared to prove with adequate documentation that you will return to Malaysia. In many cases, you will get a visa for up to 6 months regardless of how long you ask for. Especially if you apply for a multiple entry visa.
Hello. I read all the comments and your response to their questions and I’m so thankful some of my queries have been answered, the only bothers me is that a 3 months visit to a friend questionable? We are at the stage of getting to know each other. He was here last February, stayed for a month and he is now inviting me to visit him and he will shoulder all my expenses. I don’t have work at the moment but hopefully this year I’ll be back to work again in a public school as a teacher just waiting for my appointment. Do I still need a copy of his green card or passport? My interview schedule will be this 21st April. Thank you.
Louise
Philippines
Hi Louise,
3 months visit is not questionable. I hope you get your appointment soon. Yes a scanned copy of his green card or passport is always a good proof of your connection.
i want to travel to US with my friend. And can her aunt who lives in US with green card send me invitation?
Hi Admin, I’m a US citizen and I want to invite my girl friend to the states this summer. She’s a student in Ghana and also not working but I’m willing to pay for all the cost involved in it. But do I need any proof like bill pay, tax return or anything like that. And since she’ll be returning back does she also need any proof that shell be departing on the exact as stated during the process?
